TIPS/COMMENTS

BY STAN BENTLEY

I know that spring has officially arrived, and now it seems that it is really here.  This is the time of year that we all get our Mustangs out of the garage and tuned up for the summer driving season.  I think that we all should try and make the Show & Shine on May 17th. This will give us a chance to get the Mustangs loosened up and cleaned up.  We have a great time and the proceeds go to the Veterans Memorial. This event will be held at Saginaw Ford on Bay Rd in Saginaw.  The following Monday is our monthly meeting at Captain Hooks in Frankenmuth.  Try and come a little early with your Mustang so we can look, kick tires and just chew the fat.

On May the 31st we have the Frost Bite tour.  This is a one day tour around Mid-Michigan.  We have several interesting stops planned with a late afternoon lunch at Quentin & Pat Levitte’s home.  We will leave the Exit restaurant on the east side of Birch Run, exit 136 off I-75 at 8 am.  If you plan to have breakfast at the restaurant please allow time so we can leave at 8.  If you plan to go e-mail us at rmb3909@earthlink.net  or call at (810)688-3909 so we know how many hotdogs to buy.

The Bavarian Festival is June 14th and 15th in Frankenmuth.  We get to have our cars at Zehnder Park for the two days. The cost is $10 and we are requested to have dinner at Zehnder’s on Saturday evening. There is no judging here, just polishing and talking with the people and having fun.

In the May issue of the Mustang Monthly magazine there is a real good article on making your own burglar alarm.  It is on page 11 and the person made it for less than $100.

Remember, don’t be a stranger.

FIRST HEN: “That big roster has been making love to me.”

SECOND HEN: “Did you give him any hencouragement?”

FIRST HEN: “Well I did egg him on.”

DUDE: “Did you take my toothpaste?”

HILLBILLY: “No, I did not take your toothpaste. I don’t need it. My teeth ain’t loose.”

Many a campaign argument is sound, just sound.

THE PREZ SEZ

We are one third of the way through the year already and starting the show season this month!  The annual Show & Shine is on Saturday, May 17th at Saginaw Valley Ford and we look forward to seeing you there!  Oh, and the snowbirds are returning from all parts of the country and refilling our ranks!

At the monthly meeting in April, the club voted to withdraw its intention to host the National Show in 2009.  This was due to the hard economic conditions in Michigan and the difficulty in finding sponsors at this time.  (Look for a copy of the letter of withdrawal in the newsletter.)  This was a hard decision to make.   But it was better than putting on a “poor” show that would also be lacking in many ways because of funding.

By the time you read this, my wife will have had her third chemotherapy session with only one more to go!  She seems to be able to handle these very well, but has trouble with the post session treatments.

Also, by the time you get this, the special vote will be over.  I am unsure what the results are at this time, but a “mass e-mail” will be sent to members with the results after they are tabulated.  Whichever way this vote goes, it is a matter near and dear to all in the club.  Now that it is over, it is time to set aside any lingering feelings towards the issues and make this club even better!  We are here to have fun and share our passion for the Mustang with each other.

Until next time, enjoy the beautiful Michigan weather while you can – because it will change in 10 minutes!

Charlie Reinhardt

AUCTION EXPERIENCE BY QUENTIN LEVITTE

A few weeks back I received a call from my friend Stan Bentley down in Florida.  He had just received word that a BIG Mustang parts auction was in the works in Wisconsin.  Although he would not be able to attend (he’s golfing) he thought I should.  Thoughts of HiPo parts danced in my head.  It would be just like Christmas.  I called my son who lives only two hours from the auction site and asked him to get Pat and me “standby” tickets.  We sat around the airport for six hours before finally being stuffed into a plane heading for Wisconsin.

The morning of the big auction dawned cold with rain and snow in the forecast.  My son Quentin thought duck hunting might be a better idea than standing outside waiting for some dirty part to come up for bid.  This weather will mean nobody will show up.  “We’ll make a killing” I said.  Later that morning I found myself standing ankle deep in mud as two different auctioneers hawked parts.

I had my eye on a nice driver’s side headlight bucket for my ’67 sitting among a sea of ’65 through ’69 buckets.  When the auctioneer got to that pile of parts I was ready.  “How much for this pile of parts?”  What? I don’t want all of them, just one.  I panicked and somebody got them all for $30.00.  The next thing I looked for was an oil pan.  The one on my ’67 has a small rust hole.  Quentin and I pawed through all 45 pans and never did find one that was worth buying.  I was beginning to get really cold.  Quentin had stopped talking to me 45 minutes earlier.

The number of buyers was beginning to dwindle.  I was desperate – I needed to buy something.  The auctioneer walked up to a pile of new Mustang carpet, some in boxes while others were just stacked on pallets covered in a light dusting of snow.  “How much will you guys bid on all the carpet?”  I heard myself say $50 followed by silence.  Nobody else even bid.  I had finally won!  As the small group of bidders followed after the auctioneer I stood shivering and thinking what in the heck am I going to do with 12 complete sets of Mustang carpet.

My thoughts were repeated when I got back in front of Pat. . . .Luckily for me I had a couple of hours to have my excuse in order.  Oh that….I bought it for Quentin, he can put the carpet on EBay…He’ll make killing.  As Pat walked away I heard her mumble, “yeah right”.
