TIPS/COMMENTS

BY STAN

It sounds like the month of May is the month that we at the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan can get the Mustangs out and drive them.  First there is the Show and Shine on Saturday, May 19th and then our regular meeting on Monday, May 21st.  I am going to attend both of these events and I hope you can to.

It seems that we have our cars for different reasons and that is good.  Some of us like the shows and then there are the racers that just like to see how fast they can go.  Then we have people that are speculators, they like the Mustangs but they also like to make money on their cars if the chance arises.

Usually the speculator has the high end or valuable cars like the Shelby’s and the K code cars.  These are the ones that seem to be appreciating the fastest.

However, the regular run of Mustangs is slowly going up in price also.  I was looking at the want ads in some older Mustang magazines and I could not believe how much all the cars have gone up in price.  I should have bought them back then and just sat on them.  Oh well.

One of our members called yesterday and said that he broke a motor mount on his ‘65 Mustang.  The motor mounts are like the rest of the old cars, they are 40 years old and get brittle and break.  This is one item that none of us seem to check or replace.  We keep using the car until one breaks.  When it breaks the engine jumps forward and the fan takes out the radiator.  Usually, this happens under hard acceleration.  Maybe all us with the older cars should change the motor mounts, but I know we won’t.

I went over to St Charles the other day because I heard of a fellow there that just repairs Mustangs.  His name is Jeff James and he has one of the cleanest shops that I have ever seen.  He took time to show us around.  I gave him a sponsorship form to see if he wants to advertise with us.

Come to the Show and shine, I’m sure that our new trailer with the decals on will be there also. I heard they look great although I have not seen it.

This is your news letter so if you would like to put something in it or write this article you are more than welcome. We always like your input.

Remember don’t be a stranger.

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the car pool lane?

Why is there a light in the fridge and not in the freezer?

Is Disney World the only people trap operated by a mouse?

MCMM REGULAR MEETING 04-16-07

Meeting called to order by President, Dick Lebsack.  Those present were: Charlie & Lova Reinhardt, Stan & Ruth Bentley, Chris Jansen, Gary Strappazon, Gary Riley, Diane Williams, Mike Winter, Greg Nordin, Ron Loudenslager & Jennie Davidson, Leif & Melissa Johnson, David Baker, Bob Dillenbeck, Lon Hetchler, Quentin & Pat Levitte, Tom Welsh and Linda Kabobel.

We were pleased to see Dave Baker, Greg Nordin and Leif & Melissa Johnson.  We are always happy to welcome members at the monthly meetings.

Treasurer’s Report: Report was read and approved.

Property Report: Gary Riley reports no changes from last month.

Membership: Chris Jansen reports no changes from last month.  Chris informed us that his father, Jim is recovering very well from his open heart surgery.  This was very good news.

Historian: Lova Reinhardt is busy keeping the 2007 photo book up-to-date.

Cargo Trailer: We are looking for sponsors for the trailer.  The cost is between $400 and $500, but that is for 4 years.  As soon as the weather gets to at least 70 degrees we will be sealing the ceiling and floor.  If you are able to help call Gary Strappazon at (989) 652-4842

Club Merchandise and Clothing: Gary Riley reports we have two club jackets available.  Contact Gary at (989) 631-6601 for information on club clothing.

MCMM 2007 Car Show: We have pre-car show flyers available.  We will have TSS Photography taking pictures for us again this year.

2009 MCA National Show: Charlie Reinhardt and Gary Strappazon will travel to the MCA national show in Mustang, OK from 4-19 to 4-23 on a fact finding mission.  Have a safe trip.

Show and Shine: Ron Loudenslager talked about the Show & Shine to be held on Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm at Saginaw Valley Ford on Bay Road in Saginaw.  For the children the Saginaw Spirits Mascot will be there and there will also be an inflatable Hockey Arena.  Also, the Saginaw Township Police and Fire Department will be there.  The proceeds will be donated to the Saginaw County Veteran’s Memorial Fund.

Bavarian Festival: Gary Strappazon has arranged for us to have our cars parked in the Zehnder Park.  For that privilege we are required to have our dinner at Zehnder’s on Saturday night.  The cost is $20 per person.

Guest speaker was Deana Barcomb of Coupar Creations in Frankenmuth.  Deana’s business is screen printing and embroidery.  She can do almost anything Mustang related.  She showed a shirt made of a moisture wicking material which would be very nice for summer.  Her business telephone is:

(989) 652-6781.

The Open House at Hardcore Racing on Clio Road in Flint has been cancelled.

David Baker & Leif Johnson talked about their cars.

THE PREZ SEZ

We had a very nice turnout for the club meeting on April 16th.  We celebrated the Mustang’s 43rd birthday with a special birthday cake.

The membership discussed various opportunities to secure sponsorships from $30 for a business card size ad in our newsletter to a $300 platinum level.  The membership received a copy of this sponsorship proposal in the April newsletter.  I hope every member will propose at least the $30 business card size ad to worthy advertisers for our newsletter the “Hoof beats”.  I believe we have a great venue to offer opportunities for advertisers and also help the club secure funds for club activities.  If you have comments or questions on how you can obtain advertisers or sponsors, please call me at (989) 631-9536 or Tom Welsh at (989) 777-7225.  Every member needs to help your club to get sponsors.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Gary Strappazon & Charlie Reinhardt attended the MCA national show in Mustang, OK, April 19-23.  They were there to observe and study the national show operations.  This valuable information will help our club in putting on our national show in 2009.  I would like to thank them on behalf of the MCMM club and myself for taking their time and energy to do this for our club.  This would also be a time to thank all the members who give of their time and energy to make your club what it is, a car club to be proud of.  Thanks to all of you who helped with everything last year.

Don’t forget the 3rd annual Saginaw Valley Ford Show & Shine on Saturday, May 19th, (Armed Forces Day) from 10 am to 2:30 pm.  Ron Loudenslager tells me that is should be a fun day for the whole family.  The Saginaw Spirit Mascot will be there for picture taking and an inflated hockey arena that can be used by the kids.  The Saginaw Township Police and Fire Departments will give safety information, demonstrations and prizes for the family.  All makes of cars and trucks are welcome.  The registration is only $10 and will be donated to the Saginaw County Veterans Memorial Plaza in Hoyt Park.  We hope we will see many of our members there.

June is going to be another busy month for our club.  MCMM has started a tradition of having a “pony corral” during the festival.  This year again, we will have use of Zehnder Park next to Zehnder’s restaurant on main street.  We will set up on Friday, June 8th and start the Bavarian Festival “Pony Corral” on Saturday, at 9 am.  This is the third year for the “pony corral”.  Get Mustangs ready and bring a friend.  Registration is only $10 and Deana Barcomb of Coupar Creations (our club clothing supplier) will award the trophies of her choice.  The show goes from 9 am to 4 pm and then we will have dinner at Zehnder’s restaurant.  This is how we pay for the use of the park by having dinner at their restaurant.  This is a good trade off because to rent the park would be quite pricey.  The cost of the dinner is $20 per person and we will be in a private room.  On Sunday, June 10th we will have some of our club cars in the Bavarian Parade.  In the past, some of our cars were used to transport various dignitaries and festival queens in the parade.

THE PREZ SEZ CONTINUED

Monday, June 18th is the MCMM annual Strawberry Shortcake regular meeting at the home of Stan & Ruth Bentley in North Branch.  Directions will be in the June newsletter.  This enjoyable event has been around for many years.  This is a great time to invite a new member to our meeting.  Ruth makes the best strawberry shortcake and there is always enough for seconds.  The meeting starts at 7 pm.

The weekend of June 22-24 is MCMM’s 2nd Northern Pony Cruise.  We will meet at the Midland Holiday Inn at the Eastman Road exit at 2 pm on Friday, June 22nd and caravan to Glen Lake (Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes) and stay at the Maple Lane Resort.  On Saturday we will cruise through Traverse City and up the Old Mission Peninsula.  For more information see related article in newsletter.  We had a great time last year, just ask Quentin Levitte.

Some other dates to put on your MCMM calendar: The Be Cool Car Show July 13-14 in downtown Bay City.  The cruise is Friday night and the show is on Saturday.  MCMM is on the committee for this cool show.

Sunday, August 5th the Great Lakes Loons Baseball team is having a “Turn Back the Clock” Day.  We have been invited to bring our Mustangs to the event.  This is an afternoon game.  More information will be in the June newsletter.

Hot off the press from Mustang Monthly: The Franklin Mint has teamed up with Carroll Shelby Enterprises and Ford to introduce the Shelby GT 500 die-cast model.  The Vista Blue piece limited edition costs $120.  Check it out at www.franklinmint.com Carroll Shelby and Rucker Performance are building a limited-production Shelby motorcycle.  No price given.  Also, Mustang historian Wallace Wyss has a new book, SHELBY; THE MAN, THE CARS THE LEGEND.  This is a personal recounting of Carroll Shelby’s life and business career.  The book is available at your local book store or at www.amazon.com.

This is an interesting note.  Following his January auction, Russo and Steel President, Drew Alcazar said the following about restomods: “That segment is very depressed.  Clones and restomods are like Bic lighters – you use them and throw them away.  But if you have an original muscle car with matching numbers, documentation, a thorough history, and no stories, the market is strong.”

Have a great month and get that Mustang out.

Keep Smiling,

Dick Lebsack

TRAVERSE CITY AND OLD MISSION PENINSULA PONY CRUISE

The 2nd MCMM Northern Pony Cruise is June 22-24.  We will meet at the Midland Holiday Inn at the Eastman Road Exit at 2 pm.  We will caravan to Glen Lake and stay at the Maple Lane Resort.  The room rate is the same as last year, $89 per night.  Please call Rick at Maple Lane Resort for reservations.  The telephone number is (231) 334-3413.  Plans are to have dinner at Art’s Tavern in Glen Arbor on Friday night.  On Saturday morning we will cruise the Old Mission Peninsula.  Rolling hills, a morning sun rise, tours of the wineries, having lunch, viewing a lighthouse and driving a great car make for the right mixture for a pony cruise.  My plan is to have dinner at the famous Boone’s Long Lake Inn, southwest of Traverse City on Long Lake.  They are known for their “legendary steaks and seafood”.  After dinner we cruise back to Glen Lake or find a setting sunset and then a camp fire before retiring for the night.  In the morning we head for home.  We need to limit the cruise to 10 cars.  Call me if you have any questions or comments.  Club members that have signed up for the cruise, please call me so I know if my list is accurate.  Thank you, Dick Lebsack (989) 631-9536.

MCA National Show, Mustang, OK

Reported by Charlie Reinhardt

Well Gary and I made it back from Oklahoma safe and sound.  We spoke with Laurie Slawson, the MCA National Show Chairperson for about 2 ½ hours about our show in 2009.  we got plenty of good answers and the” go ahead” to start obtaining our sponsors and introducing our club as the host club for that show.  We spoke about budgets (income and expenses), planning, sponsorships and general ideas for the show.  After that we spoke with other MCA representatives about the show.  I should be receiving the artwork for the sponsors for inclusion in letters of introduction.  I also spoke with the host club’s president and the show registrar.  They both said that the final accounting would be submitted to MCA within 30 days and would be made available to us.  Another great thing that happened while there: we met the Executive Director, Becky Julian from the Chamber of Commerce.  She informed us of some recently acquired software that would measure the economic impact for the area of the show.  She will be sending me this data to use in helping to persuade the local community to support the show.  Hopefully, this will reduce the cost of the park and increase sponsors – creating a greater cash flow!
