TIPS/COMMENTS

BY STAN

The old saying, “You have come a long way baby” sure holds true for the Mustang Club of Mid-Michigan. Our people and their talents have really come to light this summer.  When I first heard that we were going to have a new trailer, I had some second thoughts as to how this was all going to come about.  At the Bavarian Festival, the trailer was there on display with all the advertising on it that members had went out and beat the bushes for.  We were in the parade representing the Mustang and our club for everyone to see, yes, we have come a long way.

I wish to thank Dick Lebsack for the trip to the Glen Lake lodge and the tour of Lake Leelanau.  Dick could not make the trip this year but he had the whole trip mapped out.  He had the stops, points of interest and the good places to eat all listed for us.  After a weekend of touring and the enjoyment of the camp fires we all made it home safely with only minor car problems. At home sitting in my easy chair I felt we had come a long way.

As most members have heard there is a national Mustang Club of America show in our future. The show is planned for June of 2009. There are many obstacles to overcome and much organization and work to make this happen. With our people and their many talents I am sure we can make this be a successful show that everyone can be proud of.  After this event I hope that I can again sit in my easy chair and say we have come a long way.

Summer is not over, there are more car- related activities such as Woodward, MOCOSM and of course our September show at Birch Run.  Our annual picnic is July 21st at Silver Lake Park.  Bring the kids and expect to have lots to eat.

There is always room for more help, such as leaders and volunteers. Usually you get out of an organization such as this what you put into it.   So I hope to see you at a club function soon.

Remember don’t be a stranger.

What bird is a letter?

What bird is essential to eating?

What good bird deserves another?

What bird is a chessman?

(Jay, Swallow, Tern, Rook.)

Treasurer’s Report: Deferred to next month.

Club Clothing: Gary Riley reports that the jackets continue to be a hit.  Jackets may be purchased from Coupar Creations, Frankenmuth (989) 652-6781.

Bavarian Festival: It was a great two days in Frankenmuth.  We had 25 members display their cars.  The people at the festival showed great interest in viewing the “ponies”.  We surprised Zehnder’s by the number of members that stayed for dinner, but they handled it nicely.  Sunday morning MCMM was interviewed by TV 5 News.  That was pretty exciting.

“Be Cool” Car Show: Will be July 13-15 in Bay City.  MCMM will handle the cruise on Friday the 13th.  Sign-up will start at 3:00 pm.  The cruise will be eleven miles long with a police escort.  Call Charlie Reinhardt at (989) 891-0414 if you can help with the cruise.  The “Be Cool” car show will begin at 8:00 am, Saturday, July 14th.  There will be a Pony Corral for all Mustangs.

MCMM 2007 Car Show: Will be Sunday, September 16th at the Birch Run Expo Center, Birch Run, MI.  The show flyers are now available.

July Regular Meeting: Will be held on Monday, July 16th and will be at our new meeting place – CAPTAIN HOOKS RESTAURANT at 175 Jefferson Ave, Frankenmuth, MI.  Jefferson Ave. is on the south end of Frankenmuth.

MCMM Summer Picnic: Will be Saturday, July 21st at Silver Lake City Park, 16095 Jennings Rd, Fenton, MI.  (See related map and invitation.)

Loon Baseball Game: On August 5th the Loon baseball game will be a “Turn Back the Clock Day” at the ball park in Midland.  They have asked our club to have a display of Mustangs there.  The cost is $8.50 per ticket.  Our club will collect the money for tickets ahead of time.  Please let Dick know at the July 16th meeting if interested and bring the ticket money too.  Or you can send your check by July 16th to Dick Lebsack at 609 Wanetah, Midland, MI  48649.

MOCSEM Car Show: Will be Sunday, August 12th.  Our club has been asked to judge their members cars.  Quentin Levitte explained the procedure for judging the cars and put out a call for added judging help from our club.  If you can participate please call Quentin at (989) 673-4514.

MCA President’s Award: Stan Bentley reported that our club application for this award has been sent in.  Points are earned from the year 2006 only and all points must be documented.  With Ruth’s help documentation was obtained indicating we had 149 points.  (100 points are needed to enter.) Now we wait.

Woodward Dream Cruise: Will be August 17-19.  We will be participating on Saturday, August 18th.  Mike Winter is working with the coordinators to have designated parking spot for MCMM.  But we need to have more MCMM members register.  At this time we have only 14 members registered.  To register for the cruise go to www.motorcityterminator.org/mustangalley/.    We had a great time last year and it is really worth it to attend.

MCMM By-Laws: The MCMM By-Laws have to be brought into compliance with our Non-Profit status.  A committee has been working on this revision.

Christmas Party: Lon Hetchler reports our reservation has been made for the first Sunday in December at the Bay City Yacht Club.  This is the same location as last year.

Meeting adjourned to enjoy strawberry shortcake.

Respectfully submitted, Diane Williams, Secretary

THE PREZ SEZ

This month I am trying something different.  The “Prez Sez” article is scattered through out the newsletter in small paragraphs.  Also, just a reminder to check out the advertising page.  These businesses support our club so if possible try and support them.

Keep Smiling,

Dick Lebsack

WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE 2007

By Mike Winter

It is time to start planning for our 2nd annual cruise to Mustang Alley on Saturday, August 18th.  Parking arrangements are still being planned but registration is now open at: www.motorcityterminators.org/mustangalley/.  So hurry up and get registered!  Be sure to put MCMM as the first thing in the club affiliation field.  This will help recognize our group for parking.  The rest of the caravan plans will be coming soon.  Any questions call me at (810) 953-0542.

MCMM LOGO

REPORTED BY GARY STRAPPAZON

On May 7, 2007 I visited the State of Michigan, Department of Labor and Economic Development Growth in Okemos.  I completed an application to certify our MCMM logo.  The club received official notice on June 5, 2007 that the certification has been completed by D.L.E.G.  The original paperwork is on file in Lansing with the Michigan Bureau of Commercial Services.

MCMM NEW LOCATION FOR MEETINGS

MCMM will have their monthly meetings at the new Captain Hooks restaurant in Frankenmuth starting with the July 16th meeting.  This new location is the former Mancino’s restaurant.  The address is 125 Jefferson Street.  Jefferson street is the intersection of Main Street and Jefferson, the first stop light south of the Main Street bridge.  A gas station is at this intersection.  Turn east for 1 ½ blocks and Captain Hooks is on the right.  Their specialty is their fish.  We hope this facility will be more conducive for a productive meeting.  The menu is reasonably priced.  Their phone number is: (989) 652-9866.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY IS A BIG WINNER

Can you believe this?  The American Cancer Society, for the last 3 years, has received over $30,000 from the “Be Cool” Car show.  You can help by being there for the “Be Cool” Car show July 13 and 14 in downtown Bay City.

“Cool City Cruizin is on Friday, “the lucky” 13th of July.  The cruise is about 11 miles long and our own Charlie Reinhardt is in charge of the cruise.  The cruisers will meet at the American Cancer Society office on the corner of Center and Pine Streets on the east end of Bay City between 4-5 pm.  The club members had a great time last year.

The car show is on Saturday, July 14th and the Mustangs have our very own pony corral on Water Street.  It is the same place we were last year.  The Chevy guys on the committee are still saying we can’t fill the pony corral.  The American Cancer society is offering a free prostate exam to the men when they register their car.  (Gosh, you guys are SO lucky!!)  Bay City is also having their sidewalk sales, so bring the wives.  (It will give them something to do while we are being examined!)  Any questions call Charlie (989) 891-0414, Gary (989) 652-4842 or Dick (989) 631-9536.  This is a fun show!

SOCIAL CHAIRPERSON REPORT

A speedy recovery is being wished for Bill Hoard.  Bill had surgery on his right wrist.  It is interesting to note that at age 82 this is Bill’s FIRST admission to a hospital for surgery!!  As a young lad he did have his tonsils removed but that was done on the kitchen table of his home!!!!

You all remember our Membership Chairman’s “new” member addition last September.

Well this is little Madelyn Jansen at age 9 months.  She is wearing a t-shirt that says: “Me, my daddy and a Mustang”

Welcome new Members:

Gary & Vicki Decker of Midland.  They have a 1964 Black with a Red top Falcon Futura convertible.

Randall & Ethel Hetzner of Saginaw.  They have a 1999 Laser Red Mustang GT convertible.

Robert & Pamela Miller of Freeland.  They have a 1965 Red Metallic Mustang convertible.

Trevor Weslack and fiancé Cindy LaRue of Hemlock.  He has a 1987 Red Mustang LX California Highway Patrol car.

Aly & Mary Merchant of Hemlock.  They have a 2005 Burgundy Mustang GT

We heartily welcome all of you to our club.  We hope to see you at our club meetings and activities.

Bavarian Pony Corral III

By Gary Strappazon

The Bavarian Pony Corral III during the Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival is now history.  We were blessed with Chamber of Commerce weather.  We had a total of 25 cars registered.  We also had a couple of parkers.  37 club members and guests enjoyed the traditional Zehnder’s family style chicken dinner and remarks by our President, Dick Lebsack.  New this year, were coupons from the Harvest Coffee House and Beanery in the Old Mill Building.  Thanks to Tammy and Matt Bolt for these coupons.  Maybe we can visit them at their original location on Saginaw Street in Bay City during the “Be Cool” Cruise and Car Show on 7-13 and 7-14.  Deanna from Coupar Creations picked her favorite Mustangs; in no particular order.  The winners were:  Quentin & Pat Levitte with their 1966 Mustang K Code coupe, Stan & Ruth Bentley with their 1967 Shelby Fastback Clone and Charlie & Lova Reinhardt with their 4 door Prototype.  They all received a beautiful embroidered “throw” with the MCMM logo on it.  Thanks, Deanna!  We also signed up new members – Randall & Ethel Hetzner of Saginaw.  On Sunday we had the Club trailer in the parade, along with 3 club members and their cars.  In addition, we had three members with their convertibles transport dignitaries in the parade.  Thanks to all who helped with logistics, working on advertising on the trailer, driving in the parade, membership and registration.  Since the club voted at dinner on Saturday night to return for our 4th year, we have spoken with Linda Kelly at Zehnder’s.  She has penciled us in for the park for 2008.  Mark your calendars for 6-14-15, 2008.

MCMM ELECTION OF NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS

According to our constitution, a nomination committee shall be formed at the July general membership meeting.  We will do this at the July 16th meeting at our new meeting place, Captain Hook’s restaurant in Frankenmuth.  The committee will present the nominations at the August general membership meeting.  Positions that are open: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Chairperson, Car Show Chairperson, Newsletter Editor and MCA Regional Director.  The term of office is for 1 year not to exceed 2 years.  Only a unanimous vote of the BOD, may a 2-year limit be exceeded only if they are unopposed.  Here is a great opportunity for you to use you leadership skills to help your club.  Is it your turn to step up and help your club?  Remember the story about Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody?  “There were important jobs to be done, and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.  Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.  Somebody got angry, because it was Everybody’s job.  Everybody thought that Somebody would do it.  But Nobody asked Anybody.  It ended up that the job wasn’t done, and Everybody blamed Everybody, when actually Nobody asked Anybody.”  Well, I am asking everybody, anybody and somebody in the club for your opportunity to serve your club.  There is that somebody to help anybody, everybody and nobody.  I bet you will enjoy the ride working for your club, I know I did!  Some of these positions may be shared with a spouse.  Just think of the fun and satisfaction you will get from a job well done.  Call me for this great opportunity that is now available to you.  (989) 631-9536.  Who knows, I may even call you!

Keep Smiling,

Dick Lebsack, President

MCMM CAR SHOW 2007

Yes, before you know it our car show will be here.  Summer is going fast and furious.  We would like to see all of our club members at the MCMM car show in Birch Run at the Birch Run Expo Center on September 16th.  This is our biggest event for generating funds.  Rich Svatora has volunteered to be the Head Judge at the show.  He is looking for judges to help judge cars as they enter the parking area.  This is a fun activity and you really get to see these fantastic cars up front and personal.  You do not need to have any experience.  We will team you up with another experienced judge.  We “train” on the job.  Gregg Glaviano will need some help in directing and parking of these great classic cars.  One other important item: Could each member bring an item for the prize table?  Some suggestions are cans of car wax, brushes, auto wash, glass cleaner, etc.  I am sure if you use your car sense you could come up with hundreds of ideas.  Visit any car parts store, Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Meijers for other ideas.  The suggested price is between $4-$10 for these prizes.  This is how many of the club sponsored car shows get their prizes; they ask their members.  Bring them to the next meeting so we can get an idea of what we have and what we need.  By the way, you can even ask a business for a donation.

Dick (round up the prizes) Lebsack

TAKE YOUR MUSTANG TO A LOONS BASEBALL GAME

Baseball, Hotdogs and Mustangs.  On Sunday, August 5th, the Great Lakes Loons Baseball is sponsoring “TURN BACK THE CLOCK DAY” at the Dow Diamond in Midland.  This is a family fun day!  Bring the kids, grandkids, friends and relatives to the Dow Diamond for some exciting events.  Between innings they have kid’s events and give out prizes.  There is also a kid’s playground.  We have 100 seats by third base for $8.50 a ticket.  There is NOT a bad seat in the park.  If you have a 1964 to 1982 Mustang or if you are a club member with an older non-Mustang and are the first 8 to call and buy your tickets, you can have your car featured around the ball park or stadium.  Other members and friends can still bring your cars.  Our club name will be featured on the giant scoreboard.  This is a great way to get club exposure and PR.  We, as far as I know, will be the only car club featured that day.  Buy your tickets from me and we will write one check to the Great Lakes Loons.  If we cannot use all 100 tickets we need to let them know so they can sell them to the public.  This game will be a sellout.  Let me know how many tickets you need by July 17th.  (989) 631-9536.

2nd ANNUAL NORTHERN MICHIGAN PONY CRUISE

BY QUENTIN LEVITTE

We all met up at the Holiday Inn parking lot in Midland for the second annual Pony Cruise to the Old Mission Peninsula.  Unfortunately, Dick Lebsack would not be leading us this year and he asked me to take charge for the weekend.  Our convoy was comprised of Linda Kabobel in her sparkling white 2001 convertible, Diane Williams in her beautiful blue 1965 convertible, Lon & Sandy Hetchler in their little red coupe, Stan & Ruth Bentley in “Mousey” their 1967 Shelby Clone along with Pat and I driving our 1965 Fastback.

Before we left Dick pulled me aside and whispered “you’re heading up a motley looking group, make sure they don’t embarrass the club”.  I told him I would do my best.  As Dick walked away I heard him mutter “that doesn’t give me much confidence”.

We left the lot at 2:30 pm and headed northwest, arriving at the Maple Lane Resort around 5:30 pm.  It was great renewing our friendship with Rich and his wife, the folks who manage this beautiful resort.  After an hour or so to get settled in our rooms we climbed back into the Mustangs and drove a few short miles to Glenn Lake for dinner.  The evening ended back at the resort with stories around a nice campfire and a toast to Pat and me as we were celebrating our anniversary.

Linda had a series of “firsts”….this was her first time on this side of the state and she experienced her very first S’more.  Linda must have endured a very deprived childhood to have missed out on these great treats.

After a light breakfast on Saturday morning we pointed the Mustangs east towards the Old Mission Peninsula located just north of Traverse City.  Our first stop was Walt’s Antiques; unfortunately, Walt was sleeping in on this fine Saturday morning so we didn’t get a chance to look inside this cozy little shop.  Next stop the Old Mission Light House.  As many of you know Ruth Bentley travels with her trusty camera and can’t resist any opportunity to take pictures.  This trip was no exception, in fact this was the third time already that she had us lined up for a “Kodak” moment and the sun had only been up for a few hours.  On some occasions Ruth just grabs a complete stranger and gives them a quick camera lesson and joins us in these pictures.  Other times she just orders us around until we get just where she wants us and then forces us to smile.

As Pat poured over the maps we headed back down the peninsula looking for a place for lunch.  We found the Old Mission General Store.  The store appears as it might have looked in the early 1900’s.  Linda enjoyed another first…her first pastie.  If you’re not familiar with this “up north” delight, it is a concoction of meat, potatoes and turnips all wrapped up in a pastry shell and covered in rich brown gravy.

Back in our Mustangs with our full stomachs we were ready for a little wine tasting.  We visited two different vineyards.  Sandy & Diane were somewhat reluctant to leave the second place, but after the owners said “no more free samples for you two” we all left and traveled back to the resort.

Later that evening we drove into Empire for dinner and ice cream.  Empire is a great little town located on the shore of Lake MI.  Later that evening we walked the main street of this cute little town, poking around in the various shops.

Sunday morning found us down by the lake for another “Kodak” moment.  Then it was off to Art’s Tavern for breakfast.  As we walked into the crowded bar Linda mentioned this was another first for her.  She had never had breakfast at a tavern before.  Around 10:00 am we saddled up for the last time and convoyed back to Midland.

Yup, we did have some car problems but nothing major and nothing that could have spoiled a super weekend.  Thanks Dick, for doing all the planning and arranging as we all benefited from your hard work.  I hope we do this again next year and more members join us for a very pleasurable weekend.
