Tips/Comments By MCMM Member Quentin
Levitte The telephone rang and I checked the number,
yup it was my friend and fellow Mustanger, Chris Jansen calling from the
dealership. His first words were “can I
put a Mustang in your garage?” I said
“slow down Chris, when did you get another Mustang?” He answered “just today the boss gave me a
’68 coupe and he wants it moved pronto.”
That started the ball rolling. Later that evening Chris and his friend Jerry backed the trailer up
to my garage door and pushed the ’68 off the trailer. When the old coupe came to rest there was a
trail of rust leading to the spot formally occupied by my Envoy. Up to this moment the ugly little coupe had
spent eight years sitting behind the old State Police Post in Caro. When the Post was closed the Chevy dealership
bought the land and consequently the old “clunker” became the property of the
owner of the dealership. When he got
tired of looking at the eye sore he gave it to Chris. Over the next week I took off the doors, hood
and trunk lid. Chris would come over in
the evening and give encouragement and advice.
The next day I would try to do things that he had requested. The first thing that sold was the seats . . .
$100. That put a smile on Chris’s
face. Next were a couple of bolts
holding the glove box door, another $10. Later, Chris brought over an engine hoist and
we will pull the engine. Maybe someone
in the club can use the old “289”. As time passed Chris would come over and we
would take parts off the car. Each part was
like a walk back in time. Under the
carpet, where the rust bugs had yet to attack we found beautiful maroon paint
and a perfect set of bolts holding on crusty seat
belts. The old ’68 still sits in my garage, we are not done taking it apart yet. But with every part taken off the friendship
between an older generation Mustanger and a younger generation Mustanger
becomes stronger. CLUB MEMBERS BIRTHDAYS CLUB
